Soundproofing home rooms to avoid irritating the neighbors

March 16, 2009

Noise from roads, overhead planes, neighboring apartments, either across, over or under yours, can be quite a problem and this is a two-way street. Imagine if you’re making a lot of disturbance and irritating your neighbors!

Noise from neighbors is a common source of disturbance and quite often presents a noise problem. It’s likely that you or your neighbors are tormented with barking dogs, loud music, TV turned up too loud, shouting, banging doors and DIY activities, either inside the building or outside. Property built before the 90’s often had little or no sound proofing, so if you happen to live in this type of construction, then it’s down to you to soundproof so you can make the noise you want (within reason) or don’t have to hear to undesirable noise from outside your home.

Noise transmittal is also a normal challenge faced in multiple office environments. Individual office enclosures generally consist of very thin walls or an arrangement of partitions, that doesn’t provide privacy or close out noise for workers.

Soundproofing a room is no mean feat and wont cost you a lot of money all at once if you do it in sections, but it will save you from many complaints from your neighbors. Noise can be got rid of in whole or in part by soundproofing the rooms in your home – whether apartment or house.

Insulating materials provide absorption however, it does take a large amount of it to make any difference. Although this does help to absorb sound that enters at one point and exits at another point some length apart since the sound travels laterally through numerous feet of insulating material. Doubling up dry walls is another way to do it and doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Carpet underlay reduces disturbance and may be applied alone or as an extra insulation. Carpet underlay is generally manufactured in several thickness’, but the applications are endless and the rewards are peace and quiet for both you and your family.

Ceiling disturbance from creaking flooring above can be blocked out by tearing down the ceiling and setting up triangular wood strips to the flooring above and to the joists. Liquid adhesive also helps to keep the floor from moving and to stop the squeaking. Ceiling tiles can also be used to capture unwanted sound reflection in any room.

Foam panels placed on walls can help to reduce unwanted noise. Foam panels or similar soft materials absorb sound because the sound travels into the soft surface and is decreased as a result. Foam or other similar soft materialscan be affixed inside a wall or attached to the outside of a wall and has good results.

Windows and door areas are two of the worst places in a room as far as sound bleeding into other areas goes. Theses are the sections of the room you should spend the most time soundproofing. Double or treble glazing is another method to implement window soundproofing. Nothing changes as far as the windows themselves go, as they will still open and close in the same manner, but the extra panel of glass and the air pocket created by the double pane greatly reduces disturbance. For doors, use the foam panels or similar on both sides with a thin wooden outer lay or similar and a framework around to cover and finish it nicely – this will help a great deal to create soundproofing.

You got it right! Its really good if you have sound proof your home. It saves you the trouble of moderating the sound of your TV and even your voice. Giving you both privacy and peace of mind that nobody is bothered by anything you are doing inside your house.

Thanks everyone for your valuable comments. Soundproofing is a really good idea for both yourself and the neighbours. There’s nothing like living next door to noisy neighbours – or if you live next to a busy street or highway, soundproofing will keep the irritating noise out.
